great Indian civilization thrived on organic farming and was one of the most prosperous countries in the world. In traditional India, the entir agriculture was practices using organic techniques, where the manure wa obtained from Cow dung & crop protection was done by using Cow urine different kinds of herbs & planting calendar for energy emitted due t cosmic rhythms (chapter 8).


Cow has been an important component in organic farming. Indian traditional farmers firmly believe that Cow milk is for human health- where as Cow dung & Cow urine nourishes the soil; bullocks have been extensively used for plowing & drafting the cart.


CURRENT SCENARIO


The 'Re-growth' of organic agriculture in India has three dimensions anc this is being adopted again by farmers for different reasons.


➤ Organic by Default

First category of organic farmers is those which are situated in zones with no-input or low-input. They represent the non certified group o Organic Farmers. For them organic is a way of life and they are doing it as a tradition (may be under compulsion in the absence of resources needec for conventional high input intensive agriculture).



➤ Organic by Conversion

Second category of farmers are those who have recently converted on in the process of conversion to organic. This group comprises of both certified and un-certified Organic Farmers. They have realized sooner 

than later, the ill effects of conventional agriculture, may be in the form of reduced soil fertility, food toxicity and/or increasing cost resulting into diminishing returns.


➤Organic by Adoption

Third category comprises of farmers who have systematically adopted the commercial organic agriculture to capture emerging market opportunities and premium prices. Majority of farmers from this group are certified. The entire data available on organic agriculture today, relates to these commercial organic farmers. They believe that Organic farming can sustain and enhance the health of soil, plant, animal, human and planet as one & indivisible.



➤ Organic Under Compulsion

Fourth category comprises of farmers, who are unable to sustain conventional farming practices, thus adopting organic farming practices due ever increasing inputs cost & reduced productivity.


There are many food items, which come in the market from 'by default organic areas. However, there is no effort made to identify & classify such products for the awareness of the consumers.


Consumers have realized that food items coming from conventional farms carry lots of toxic residues which are used during the tenure of crop cultivation. These toxic residues reaching with food into human & animal body are the root cause to a series of diseases. Therefore efforts are being initiated by consumers at individual level to grow many of the easy crops in their home gardens.
